GOOD WILL HUNTING

Dear Movie Buffs,

Do you remember the 1997 movie, GOOD WILL HUNTINGIMDB describes, “Will Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.” It was written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and directed by Gus Van Sant. It had an incredible cast including Matt Damon, Ben Affleck Minnie Driver, Stellan Skarsgård, Casey Affleck and the unforgettable Robin Williams. In fact, Robin Williams won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Well, I watched it and fell in love. It was and still is one of my favorite movies. I related on so many levels. I understood Will’s identity struggle and trying to find his place in the world.

I watched that movie and said to myself, “I can do this.” I was struggling and wrestling inside, percolating with ideas. I fell in love with writing as a teenager. When I watched GOOD WILL HUNTING, I fell in love with the art of screenwriting.

I ordered Good Will Hunting: A Screenplay from Amazon.com, and I taught myself how to write screenplays.

I picked up other materials along the way . . . Dov Simen’s 2-Day Film School DVD set, Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting by Syd Field, Final Draft software, Save the Cat by Blake Snyder to name a few. And I went to town writing my heart out.

I finished my first script and handed it to my pastor – Keith Collins. Needless to say, it was the first time anyone gave him a script to read. He encouraged me with his insights and wisdom.

I tore the first draft up and the second draft . . . And of course the third draft of FINGERPRINTS OF GOD and SAVING GRACE. I realized that I gave too much detail. I had to learn the art of brevity! I wrote several but knew they were more for me. I finally wrote SLAVE and changed the name to UNFORESEEN. Next came NEW YEAR’S SWITCH which I changed to NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION. I wrote SAM CARES as a TV sitcom. I wrote TEMPORARY INFRACTIONS and changed the name to STEPPING STONES. And lastly, I wrote LIFE STORMS. Most of them are dramas with the exception of NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION AND SAM CARES. The challenging one for me was LIFE STORMS because it was my true story. I cried, prayed, meditated, breathed, and meditated again.

When I tell others I’m a writer, they immediately share their story. Everyone has a story inside. Some take a leap of faith and have the courage to write it. . . One word at a time.

For me, it began with GOOD WILL HUNTING. Who would have thought?

What is your favorite movie?

What inspires you?

What motivates you?

What do you have aching inside  of you, ready to come out?

Are you struggling with your identity?

Do you know who you really are?

I am a passionate screenwriter, Life Scripts author/speaker and inspirational blogger. But I am truly so much more.

With Love,
Jennifer
